Skuld – Keeper of What Shall Be
Skuld is the youngest and most fearsome of the three Norns. Her name means "that which shall be," and in her hands rests something neither Urd nor Werdanda possesses: the future itself — its mystery, its inevitability, and the full weight of consequences not yet arrived. She does not weave from memory like Urd, nor does she act in the living present like Werdanda. She records what is yet to come, and she cuts the threads when their time is done.
Where Urd offers wisdom and Werdanda offers agency, Skuld offers something more unsettling and more honest: the reminder that every choice carries an echo into the unknown, and that fate, though written, is never entirely beyond the reach of the living.
Design – Obverse
Sabatowicz's portrayal of Skuld is the most dramatic of the three Norns — deliberately so. She stands at the foot of Yggdrasil in a hooded robe and cloak that conceal more than they reveal, her identity as shrouded as the future she governs. At her belt hang human skulls, symbols of mortality and the price of foreknowledge. In her hand she holds a sharp knife — the instrument with which she severs the thread of life, the final word on every fate she has recorded. Around her lie the fallen and the still-living alike, surrounded by swords that speak to battles not yet fought. It is a composition of genuine power: a figure who does not threaten, but simply knows, and in knowing, holds everything.
Design – Reverse
The reverse completes the visual arc of the Norns trilogy: the Germania Mint double-headed eagle entwined by Yggdrasil's roots and golden threads of fate, some of which are broken. On Urd's coin those breaks spoke of escaping the past; on Werdanda's, of conscious action in the present. Here, on Skuld's coin, they carry their final meaning — that even the recorded future remains sensitive to the decisions of the living. Fate is written, but it is not sealed. The threads can still be cut or redirected by choices made now, in the present that Werdanda governs, shaped by the past that Urd holds. The three reverses, viewed together, form a single coherent statement about time, fate, and human agency.
The Norns Series – Complete
With Skuld, the Norns trilogy is complete. Urd holds the past, Werdanda weaves the present, and Skuld records the future — three coins, three perspectives on time and fate, unified by Kinga Sabatowicz's vision and the recurring imagery of Yggdrasil's roots. Each coin stands alone as a compelling piece of modern numismatic art. Together, they form one of the most narratively complete series Germania Mint has produced. For collectors who have acquired Urd and Werdanda, Skuld is the essential conclusion. For those discovering the series here, all three are available from Summit Metals.
Investment & Collector Appeal
Skuld rounds out a 5,000-piece limited trilogy that rewards complete-set collectors. As the final coin in the series, it is the piece that gives the other two their full context — and the one most likely to be sought out by collectors who came to the series late and are working backward. The .9999 fine silver content, Germania Mint's strong collector following, and the narrative significance of completing a three-coin set all support its long-term collectible value. Whether acquired alone or alongside Urd and Werdanda, Skuld is a coin with genuine presence.
